ACCORDING to the invitation to ex-teacher Bill Hannan's book launch at the Australian Education Union in Abbotsford the other night, it was open house. "All welcome" was the call, but things did not quite work out that way. Amid those celebrating the publication - The Best of Times, Hannan's story of the glorious "expansion of Victorian secondary schools in the 1950s and 1960s" - there was a malcontent. "This bloke was handing out papers attacking Hannan and the 'educational left'," said one observer. "Said he was there to provide attendees with an alternative view." The rebel was identified as Marcus L'Estrange (above), a teacher and union member who was duly pointed towards the door by AEU state secretary Brian Henderson (right)... read full story
